24 Petitions of St. John Chrysostom

JOHNCHRY.JPG
This series of petitions of St. John Chrysostom can be found with slightly varying wording, but the essentials remain the same. It can be prayed in entirety, or one petition per hour of the day / evening (which, of course would be an excellent way to help one adhere to St. Paul’s admonition to “pray without ceasing” [1 Thessalonians 5:17]).

1. O Lord, deprive me not of Thy heavenly blessings.
2. O Lord, deliver me from eternal torments.
3. O Lord, if I have sinned by mind, thought, word, or deed, forgive me.
4. O Lord, deliver me from every type of ignorance, apathy, and faint-heartedness.
5. O Lord, deliver me from every temptation.
6. O Lord, enlighten my heart darkened by sinful desires.
7. O Lord, I, a human being, have sinned; Thou art a gracious God, and Thou knowest the weakness of my soul; have mercy on me.
8. O Lord, send down Thy grace to help me, that I may glorify Thy holy Name.
9. O Lord Jesus Christ, inscribe me in the Book of Life, and grant me a blessed end.
10. O Lord my God, even though I have done nothing good in Thy sight, grant me, according to Thy grace, that I may lay down a worthy beginning.
11. O Lord, sprinkle in my heart the dew of Thy grace.
12. O Lord of heaven and earth, remember me, Thy sinful servant, cold of heart and impure, in Thy Kingdom.
13. O Lord, receive me in repentance.
14. O Lord, do not forsake me.
15. O Lord, save me from misfortune.
16. O Lord, grant me pure thoughts.
17. O Lord, grant me tears of repentance and remembrance of death.
18. O Lord, grant me the thought to confess my sins.
19. O Lord, grant me humility, charity, and obedience.
20. O Lord, grant me tolerance, generosity, and meekness.
21. O Lord, implant in my heart the root of all blessings: the fear of Thee.
22. O Lord, enable me to love Thee with all my heart and soul, and to obey Your will in all things.
23. O Lord, shield me from evil persons, demons and passions, and from every other evil.
24. O Lord, Who knowest Thy creation and that which Thou hast willed for it; may Thy will also be fulfilled in me, a sinner, for Thou art blessed forevermore. Amen.

Communion Prayers

Communion

Two Communion Prayers of St. Basil the Great

(Before Communion)

O Lord, I know that if I partake unworthily
of Your most pure body and precious blood,
I will be guilty:
I will be eating and drinking my own condemnation
by not giving proper reverence to Your body and blood.
But, trusting in Your mercy,
I dare to come to You, for You have said:
“whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
abides in me, and I, in him.”
Be merciful to me, a sinner, O Lord,
and do not reject me,
but deal with me according to Your mercy.
Grant this holy mystery be for the healing of my soul and body,
for the enlightenment of my mind,
and for the protection of my life.
Let it be for the amendment of my conduct,
for perseverance, for the increase of virtue,
and for protection in the communion of Your Holy Spirit.
Give me your body and blood, O Lord,
as a provision for the journey to eternal life,
and for an acceptable answer at Your judgement seat.
Do not let it be for my judgement or condemnation,
Amen.

(After Communion)

O Master, Christ our God, King of ages, and Maker of all things!
I thank You for all the favors You have granted me,
and for having given to me
Your pure and life-giving, precious mysteries.
I pray You, O gracious God who loves mankind,
Keep me under your protection
and under the shadow of Your wings.
Grant that until my last breath,
I may worthily receive Your holy mysteries
with a clear conscience for the remission of my sins
and for life everlasting.
For You are the Bread of Life, the Fountain of Holiness,
and the Provider of Graces,
and we glorify You- together with Your Father,
and Your Holy Spirit,
now and ever, and unto the ages of ages,
Amen.

The Stichera of the Resurrection

resurrection-of-christ-with-angels-orthodox-christian-icon-11

Your cross, O Lord, is life and resurrection to Your people,
And we place our hope in it.
Therefore, we sing to You:
O, our risen God, have mercy on us!

Your burial, O Master, opened paradise to the human race.
Delivered from death,
We now sing to You:
O, our risen God, have mercy on us!

With the Father and the Spirit,
Let us glorify Christ, risen from the dead.
Let us cry out to Him with a full voice:
You are our life and resurrection:
have mercy on us!

You arose from the tomb on the third day,
as it was written, O Christ,
And raised our ancestors with You.
Therefore, the human race glorifies You
And praises Your holy resurrection.

Hymn to the Resurrection…

Pascha

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ,
let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only Sinless One.
We worship Thy Cross, O Christ,
and thy holy Resurrection we hymn and glorify;
for Thou art our God,
and we know none other beside Thee,
We call upon Thy name.
O come, all you faithful,
let us worship Christ’s holy Resurrection,
for behold, through the Cross
joy hath come to all the world.
Ever blessing the Lord,
we hymn His Resurrection;
for having endured crucifixion,
He hath destroyed death by death.
